Town Lose to Scunny

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 08/10/2008 (Last updated: 09/10/2008)

A much improved performance by the Mariners in the Johnstone Paint match at Scnuthorpe saw them lose 2-1 to their local rivals, but had fortune favoured the Mariners they could have won the game. On three occasions Scunthorpe had to thank the woodwork for keeping them in the game.

Scunthorpe started brightly and had two chances cleared off the line in the opening minute.

However Town came back though and Till had a shot deflected wide on 15, then soon afterwards Jarman hit the bar.

Crosby gave Scunny the lead just before half time when Crosby headed in a free kick. Morris then added a second on 43.

Shortly after the break Town pulled a goal back through Hegarty.

On 57 Jamie Clarke blasted a free kick against the bar, the second time Grimsby had hit the woodwork.

Barnes then saved from Togwell in a one on one, before with 10 minutes to go Grimsby hit the bar again with a header from a Jamie Clarke free kick.

When Scunny broke Newey cleared the ball off the line with a last gasp effort with 4 mins to go to keep Town in it.

The match ended 2-1, with Grimsby very unfortunate not to get anything from the game.

A full report will appear later.
