Mike Newell Sacked

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 18/10/2009

MIKE Newell has been sacked by Grimsby Town after a disappointing start to the season and a string of poor results. Youth Team Manger Neil Woods will take over the role in a caretaker capacity. Newell managed just over a year in the Blundell Park hot seat, and kept Town up last season.

The board say he has been sacked for "irretrievable breakdown", rather than citing recent results. There has also been a suggestion that he has been linked by Tranmere, following the dismissal of John Barnes last week.

No doubt the full story will emerge shortly, and will be posted on here as soon as the information is made public.

Newell has also been criticised for the poor disciplinary record at the club (including himself) and for allowing a "drinking culture" amongst some of the players.

A statement by the club explains the board's thinking: "Despite the intention for continued support beyond the recent poor results and disappointing performances the club has dismissed Mike Newell due to irretrievable breakdown.

"The directors believe they have done everything possible to back him during his period with the club but were left with no alternative but to terminate his contract with immediate effect.

"The club appreciates Mike Newell's efforts to take this football club forward and wish him all the best for the future."
