Newell Speaks Out

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 20/10/2009

MIKE Newell has spoken of the events leading up to his dismissal as Grimsby Town manager at the weekend. Newell took charge of the team during the 2-0 defeat at home to Rochdale, then had some sort of altercation with Town Chairman John Fenty, which led to his dismissal the following evening.

Newell told the Grimsby Telegraph: "It's true that I had a bit of a row with the chairman on Saturday night - I'm a strong person and will always have an opinion."

The former Town boss acknowledged that Fenty ultimately made the decisions and said that he had no hard feelings about how it ended up.

"The chairman is the boss and he has the final say and that's how things ended up, " said Newell. "But I'm not going to fall out with anyone over it.

"I like the chairman - he's straight down the line and has been supportive of me from the first day I arrived. I won't change my opinion of him because of this."

Newell thanked the Grimsby fans and said it was a good club to work for. He was also considering his future in football.

Grim Rob Says: What exactly happened and was said we will probably never know for sure. Other than the issue of compensation to Mike Newell, it doesn't really matter who did and said what and the club has to move on and find another manager. Whoever gets the job, and for the moment Neil Woods is in the driving seat, has a talented set of players to work with, and with a bit of luck will be able to move away from the relegation places.
