Who will win League 2?

GTFC - not us!
GTFC - not us!

Town Hooligans? Surely Not!

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 29/11/2010

GRIMSBY Town have received the second highest number of banning orders of any club in England in the past year. Supporters of GTFC surpassed clubs with a notorious hooligan element in the past such as Cardiff, Millwall, Leeds and West Ham. Only Sheffield Wednesday had more supporters banned from watching the game.

What makes it worse is the percentage of supporters who are banned, which are not included in the figures just released by the home office, but can be easily worked out. Sheffield Wednesday averaged over 16,000 last season, but Grimsby averaged almost 4500 which means that 1 in 100 Grimsby Town supporters have been banned! Presumably those banned are not the only ones causing trouble, but it would not seem unreasonable to presume fro these figures that something like 1 in 30 GTFC fans is a hooligan!

That does seem hard to believe. Apart from Lincoln nobody we played last season we really "hate", with the possible exception of Chesterfield. There is virtually no trouble at hardly any of our games that I go to, and I have always believed most of them to be overpoliced. I rarely go to pubs before games but when I do the atmosphere seems to be friendly enough. The Burton game probably contributed a large number of those banned, but I presume that the individuals concerned (and their friends) attend other games as well.

As someone who started watching football in the early 80s, the amount of trouble at games is minute compared to what it was then, but I find it hard to believe that our own Mariners are the worst club in England in the small amount of trouble which remains!

What do you think? Are Grimsby fans really the biggest hooligans in English football? Or maybe Town wannabe hooligans are just not very good at it, and tend to get caught, compared to their counterparts elsewhere?
