Late Goal Denies Town Win

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 27/03/2013

GRIMSBY's four game losing streak came to an end with a 1-1 draw against Gateshead, but the Mariners will be disappointed not to have taken all three. Winning 1-0 and dominating the game, Town missed the chances to give themselves a two goal lead, then conceded a late equaliser and had to settle for a draw.

Town started with a radical new 4-3-3 line-up, with several changes from the Wembley side just 48 hours before (only four players started both games). Southwell, John-Lewis and Jamie Devitt formed the Grimsby attack. It produced very few chances for Town in the first half hour, when Gateshead had the better of what few opportunities there were. Devitt came closest when he hit the bar from a free kick on 37 mins. 5 mins later Southwell and Naylor both mishit good chances and Naylor blasted it over the bar.

Grimsby went ahead at the start of the second half. Devitt's free kick was cleared and Andi Thanoj volleyed in from just outside the box. It was a spectacular strike from the young Albanian international.

Town gained confidence from the goal and went agonisingly close to going 2-0 when Devitt broke and hit the post again, with the ball trickling along the line.

With 11 minutes left, Gillies equalised against the run of play with a free kick, and that's how the game ended.

Town can lick their wounds and rest until Saturday when they don't have to travel, as Grimsby have a must win game at home to Barrow.

Gateshead: Bartlett, Cummins, Curtis, Clark, Boyle, Gillies, Turnbull, Chandler, Fowler, Brown, Donaldson

Subs: Nixon, Bush, Galpin, Henderson, McGorrigan

Grimsby: McKeown, Wood, Pearson, Miller, Thomas, Thanoj, Disley, Naylor, Southwell, John-Lewis, Devitt

Subs: Hatton, Cook, Hannah, Marshall, Wilson
