Southwell Causes Fixture Chaos for Town

DAYLE Southwell came into the side against Coalville in Tuesday night's replay and gave manager Paul Hurst a reminder that there is an in-house alternative to Liam Hearn, who looks likely to miss the rest of the season. Southwell bagged a second half hattrick to send Grimsby to Barnet for Round 2 of the Trophy.

Coalville had defended stoutly for the first 70 minutes of the game, and had several chances to score themselves before Town showed their class in the final 20 minutes. The Mariners finally broke the deadlock when Bignott set up Southwell who scored the opener. 5 minutes later Southwell added a second with his head, then in the dying staged Southwell claimed his hat trick with a deflected goal.

The Mariners had two youth team players Humble and Winfarrah in the back four, and another two youth teamers on the bench, as well as several fringe first team players in the starting XI.

The result though causes fixture havoc for Grimsby, who are still in both cup competitions. The replay with Coalville had already pushed the home league game with Welling back a week, following the FA Cup clash with Northampton on Saturday. Then the FA Trophy Second Round with Barnet on Saturday, December 14 has caused a postponement of the league game away with Southport on that date.

Regardless of whether either Barnet or Grimsby win, the league match at the Hive on 11th January is postponed as the FA Trophy Third Round falls on that date.

A further complication is if either Grimsby or Cambridge win their FA Cup 2nd Round matches then the league match at the Abbey Stadium on January 4th will also be postponed, as the FA Cup 3rd Round falls on that date.

If either of the Northampton of Barnet games are drawn then replays will also have to be scheduled into a busy winter period for the Mariners,
