Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

We are Town!
We are Town!

GRIMSBY ended a year that has seen many lows at Blundell Park with one of the most impressive scorelines of the calendar year. A year that started with a 1-6 defeat to Walsall ended with a 3-0 victory over Port Vale, and Town ended 2024 in a playoff spot and within a point of an automatic promotion spot.

Town were the better side in the first half, although they struggled to create many chances in the first half hour. The best chance fell to Luker when he found space and shot low forcing a save from the 'keeper. The Mariners took the lead not long after when a perfectly weighted curling cross-shot from Davies was bundled over the line from McJannet on the far post.

Port Vale had long periods of possession in the second half, and Cass was forced off with an injury, with Warren a direct replacement. The Mariners struggled to get out of their own half and often squandered possession when they did have the ball. Tharme came on for Luker, with David Artell moving to a defensive 5 to try and batten down the hatches.

With Vale dominating the game, Town scored against the run of play which Tharme headed in a Hume free kick. Vale continued to press but the game was put beyond doubt by Svanporsson, who forced a mistake from the 'keeper, robbing the ball from him, then slotting it in to put the game beyond doubt.

Grimsby finished the year in 5th spot, something few would have predicted at any stage, and they face third-bottom Accrington on New Year's Day with the chance to rise even further up the table.
