Town Make it Five Straight Wins

GRIMSBY produced a masterclass of an away performance at Cheltenham, limiting the opposition to a handful of chances, despite them having most of the possession. Kieran Green put Town in front after just 5 minutes with a long-range strike.
Town looked dangerous on occasions, but allowed Cheltenham to have plenty of the ball. But it was the Mariners who scored the second decisive goal with 15 minutes to go when a Kabia cross evaded everyone. The two-goal cushion allowed Grimsby to negotiate the final 15 minutes with relative ease.
Lavelle replaced Tharme in defence in the only change from the side that beat Barnet last weekend. Town started strongly, but Green's finish for the fifth-minute opener was exquisite. The midfielder found some space about 25 yards out, and when he received the ball, he nonchalantly looked up and blasted it into the top corner
Cheltenham saw a lot of the ball in the period after the opening goal, but Town defended solidly, and when they did break through, Smith was there to save with his feet after a strong Thomas run and turn past Sweeney. Deeming then went closer for the home side when his shot hit the post, and Smith was needed again to make a save from Miller.
Town had a chance to take the lead at the start of the second half, but Vernam couldn't convert Burns's cross. Green was the provider for the next Grimsby chance, but Soonsup-Bell slipped at the crucial moment. Cook was introduced with 20 minutes to go and is the perfect player when defending a lead, as he can hold the ball up and give defenders something to worry about. He had a hand in the second goal, as his presence in the box meant Kabia's (another sub) cross went straight in, beating Cook as well as the Colchester players.
Colchester had been on top before the second goal, but the strike against the run of play knocked the stuffing out of them, and Town went on to record their fifth straight league win. Grimsby took their chances, defended strongly, and the substitutions came at the right time, with a strong bench injecting different challenges for the opposition to deal with.
Grimsby travel to Colchester in midweek, one of the sides in the five-point gap between them and the bottom play-off place.
