He's So Excited!

News From 1st July 2000

Ivano

Dundee manager Ivano Bonetti is delighted at the prospect of returning to Blundell Park for a pre-season friendly against Grimsby on July 21st.

The Italian who filled Blundell Park to capacity nearly every time he set foot on the playing field, is relishing the prospect of emerging from the tunnel again to a rapturous reception. He spoke of his joy at the prospect of returning to the ground where he was idolised, and to face the fans who worshiped him once again.

Bonetti enthused:

"I am very, very happy to come back and play against Grimsby.
"I want to come back just to meet the crowd and to play
"This is the perfect opportunity to come and enjoy myself on Blundell Park again."

Bonetti, still referred to by his Christian name by the Blundell Park faithful, admits he will be very emotional running out of the tunnel, doubtless with the deafening chant of "Ivano, Ivano" resounding from all four sides of the ground.

No doubt it will rekindle happy memories for those in the stand too, particularly the 1-0 defeat of Alan Buckley's West Brom in 1995, when Bonetti scored the winner in front of the Pontoon and was nearly mobbed by the crowd in a "farewell" lap of honour at the end of the game.

During his brief stay in Cleethorpes Grimsby rose to second in the first division, and a historic promotion to the Premiership looked an outside chance. Sadly it all went horribly wrong at Luton when Bonetti and then-manager Brian Laws had an infamous dressing room bust-up that ultimately led to both men leaving the club, court cases and relegation for the Mariners.

What's clear is that July 21st is a date in every Grimsby fan's diary, as well as in a certain Italian's.
