Brigg 1 Town 3

News From 15th July 2000

Daryl Clare

With all the events happening off the field in recent days it's easy to forget that Town's pre-season has officially started and got off to a promising start last night with a 3-1 victory at local non-league side Brigg Town.

Transfer-listed Lee Ashcroft and Daryl Clare (two) got the goals to cheer up Grimsby's suffering fans, as it's been a very long time since Town strikers netted 3 times in one game!

Just got back from my first trip to see Brigg Town. Quite enjoyed it. Nice to see Mssrs Huxford, Burnett and Smith (R) mixing with the fans.

Ashcroft opened the scoring after the ball was played into a packed area and his first attempt was kept out by the keeper, only for the rebound to come back at him at just the right height for him to head it back, right in the centre of the goal, from about 6 yards.

Brigg equalised in the second half, partly due to the amount of subs town had made still warming up, and partly due to some terrible keeping from Mr. Croudson. A harmless looking ball was played in and as he attempted to dive on it, let it go straight under his body to give L???? the easiest goal he will ever score. I hope Croudson has got the jitters out of his system from this game, because if the truth be known he never looked comfortable the whole time he was on the pitch. He was nearly shown up twice more, when Brigg players tried to lob him from some distance, and would have succeeded had they been on target.

But Daryl calmed the nerves with a brace towards the end. The 1st a downward header from a left wing cross that went straight through the keepers legs, and then just as we were saying that Donavan was anonymous, he conjured up a neat little lob, that was a certain goal 'till the keepers finger tips touched it onto the bar. However, Daryl was on hand to poke it home, and give a more credible look to the final score.

A useful looking Andy Smith, on trial from Barnsley played the first half on the right wing (with Oswins name on the back of his shirt), and Rowan came on towards the end (with McKenzie's name on his shirt (I hope the club find enough money to get them their own shirts for the coming season)) but had little chance to impress. Also, apart from the normal squad, Chapman and Bloomer had very reassuring games.

Anyway, all seems to be on track, even though this was no more than a team in 1st gear.

First Half: (4-4-2) Coyne, Butterfield, Chapman, Handyside, Raven, Oswin, Buckley, Coldicott, Groves, Livingstone, Ashcroft.
Second Half: (4-4-2) Croudson, McDermott, Gallimore, Bloomer, Raven, Donovan, D.Smith, Pouton, Black, Clare, Allen.
