Senior Cup Exit

By: Stephen Bateman
Date: 30/11/2000

The Mariners were muscled out of the Lincs Senior Cup last night by a physical Stamford side. In spite of dominating the game, Grimsby's young side were unable to match the competitive spirit of their local rivals.

As expected Alan Pouton returned to action after suffering a knee injury, and looked impressive after competing well in the Town midfield until he was replaced after sixty minutes. It is hoped that Pouton will be fit enough to take a position on the bench against Crystal Palace on Saturday. Much of the attention was focused on triallists Sean Gregory and Brian Wake - both currently Middlesbrough youth players. "Their keeper made a couple of good saves from Brian," said Reserves boss Paul Wilkinson. "They both did well and to be fair to them they are both youth team players really and they were chucked in at the deep end. But these games are always very physical and they cause you problems. "They know they can't match you for fitness so they have a go at you. We had four youth team play ers on the bench, and three playing from the start." Wilkinson went on to comment that in spite of the result he was "well chuffed" with the overall performance. The Reserves now travel to Barnsley next Wednesday as they look to improve their abilities with fixtures against teams of a higher quality.
