Question of the Week

Who will win League 2?

Nielsen Confusion

By: Matt Westcott
Date: 29/01/2001

Confusion surrounds renegade Danish striker David Nielsen's next move following his highly publicised departure from Blundell Park. Nielsen, who was initially hailed as a hero by Mariners fans when he was drafted in on loan from FC Copenhagen by manager Lennie Lawrence

The 24 year old striker fell out with the club over wage demands and was sent back to his homeland. It had been claimed today that he was lining up a move to First Division rivals, Sheffield Wednesday, and could sign this week, but Owls' boss Paul Jewell has poured cold water on the story.

Nielsen's agent, Poul-Erik Pedersen, said: "I can tell you that David should be signing for Wednesday later this week."

However, Jewell, who off-loaded lanky frontman Andy Booth to Spurs on loan and is expected to oversee the departure of fellow forward Gilles De Bilde to Spain, had a surprise in store for the Dane if he was expecting to see the welcome mat at Hillsborough's gates.

"A blind man can see that the side needs improving and we are working extremely hard to bring people in," he said, adding though he had initially been curious about Nielsen, who played against the Owls at Blundell Park earlier this season, had had now dropped his interest.

Speculation is mounting that the man Jewell is seeking is Manchester City striker, Gareth Taylor. The one-time Sheffield United star has fallen out of favour at Maine Road and would appear the ideal candidate to help the Owls in their fight to stave off relegation.

Having seen how drawn out and acrimonious the negotiations over a permanent deal for Nielsen at Grimsby turned out, the Owls may prefer to go for someone who has connections with the City and is already in the country.

City boss Joe Royle said: "Sheffield asked about Gareth a week ago, but there has been nothing more since. I don't know whether Andy Booth going to Spurs will accelerate their interest, but we haven't had any more direct contact with Sheffield."
