Question of the Week

Who will win League 2?

Butterfield: "Frustrated"

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 11/04/2001

DANNY BUTTERFIELD has spent much of the season playing second fiddle to veteran right back John McDermott. His first team changes in the main either have been as cover for Macca when injured, or playing out of position on the right hand side of midfield.

Although bothered by the lack of opportunity Butterfield has been keeping himself fit, as the 21 year old full back told Mariners Net: "It's frustrating, I want to be back playing. The gaffer's not picking me at the moment so obviously I've just got to keep working hard and try to get back in the first team. I am keeping myself fit, ready to be given a chance, and then come in and do well."

Butterfield felt that not only was Saturday's win over Tranmere critical, but that this weekend's fixture against Watford at Blundell Park was also equally important: "It was a big game for us. We needed to win that one really. Watford on Saturday will be just as crucial. It will be a hard game, but we are at home and we fancy our chances against anyone at home - so it will be a good game. The fans were really good last Saturday, and if they do the same this Saturday then hopefully we can put a good performance on for them.

"We have got a tough run-in. Any point really against Watford will be a good point, but obviously we are after all three. We are better at home than we are on the road, so having four home games left is a big plus for us, hopefully we'll pick up enough points to stay safe."

Butterfield believes that the third relegation place will not be decided until the final weekend, with so many clubs clustered around a similar points total: "There are probably six or seven teams still involved, and the results last night have brought it even closer. I can see this one going right to the end," concluded the Boston-born full back.
