Question of the Week

Who will win League 2?

Grimsby Disablities Players in National Call-Up

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 25/07/2001

ELEVEN players from Grimsby Town Disabilities Football Club have been selected for a trial with the England Multidisabled Football Squad in the first week of August, following the appointment of GTDFC club manager Edward Wright to the England coaching staff.

They will train along with another 19 players from National League teams, initially for a 16 man squad to face Belgium later that month, and as a 22 man squad to begin forming the basis of the World Cup squad in two years time.

Edward Wright was keen to impress that the players have been selected on their own merits, "Kevin Roots, the England manager has seen us play five times this year and selected nine players that he was particularly keen on. I have recommended another two players, which he is happy to see at the trials."

"Following recent performances by the players, I see no reason why there should be at least five players from Grimsby in the National Team that plays Belgium, and who knows a couple more might make a big enough impression."

The players selected are; Danny Ward (goalkeeper), Owen Griffiths, Gavin Osborne, Roy Sheridan, Dail Franklin, Jomail Michael (defenders), Shaun Jackson, John Dyke, Ismail Mustafa (midfield), Jason Land, Dean Cook (forwards).

Following on the back of the National League Championship win, the England news has brought new recognition to the work done by the Football In The Community linked club. As always, finding funds to maintain the programme which operates to provide regular playing and coaching to over 50 players with a disability at all levels within the game is difficult, and the club are always looking for organisations who can help out with sponsorship or donations.

The achievement of so many local players under the scheme has shown the value of the investment that people have put in to provide such a vast array of opportunities for so many local footballers. Anyone that would like to help the club for next season or would like to sponsor one or more of the players involved in the England trials can contact Edward Wright on 07931 556706, e-mail grimsby.town.dfc@talk21.com or visit the official web site www.gtdfc.com
