Alan Buckley bought ‘Diddy’ from Northampton towards the end of the 88/89 season. Before his spell at Northampton. Although Gilbert failed to make the grade at Scunthorpe, he was a huge hit with the Mariners faithful: his fantastic skills, neat touches and eye for goal were obvious factors.
Like most of the great team of the early 90’s Diddy joined former boss Alan Buckley at West Brom. Upon his return to Blundell Park Alan Buckley briefly brought Gilbert back on loan for the start of the 97/98 season, but after a successful first few games Gilbert was sent back to the Hawthorns.
