Signed by Kenny Swain on loan from Man Utd in the 1996/97 relegation season. Appleton could play anywhere across the midfield and made his mark when he scored a thunderbolt of a goal vs Man City to earn a 1-1 draw. Town had to let him go as they could not afford him - he then signed for Preston who were a league below Town at the time! Now plys his trade at WBA after a bi-money-move.
