Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Former Striker Faces Life-Threatening Illness

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 06/09/2001

FORMER Grimsby Town striker Marc North is reported to be seriously ill with lung cancer but is fighting back. A fans' favourite who propelled Town into the 4th round of the FA cup in 1989 with two superb goals against Middlesbrough, Marc was part of the Buckley era at Grimsby.

The report in the Grimsby Telegraph quotes assistant manager John Cockerill who said: "It is a terrible shock, he was a very good lad and on his day he was a very good player. He had a lot of ability and, as it proved, could play at the front or the back"

Marc North, now 34, who made 64 appearances for Town between 1987 and '89, scoring 17 goals, represented 19 clubs during his career, despite his football career ending prematurely at the end of 26 through injury.

The Luton-born striker represented amongst others Luton Town, Scunthorpe, Lincoln, Birmingham, Grimsby, Leicester City, Leicester United, Luton Town, Whetstone, Shepshed, Walsall, Boston, Kettering, St. Andrews, Desborough, St. Andrews and Corby.

Cockerill continued "He lived with Kevin Jobling for a while and he mixed well with the other lads. From myself and everybody at the club our best wishes go out to him"

"...He was told that he had only two weeks to live..."

A source close to North's home club of Luton Town said: "He was told last week that he had only two weeks to live. It is tragic."

Cherry Newbury, Luton’s Secretary said: "He is currently very poorly in hospital but is in good spirits and determined to fight his illness"
