Question of the Week

Who will win League 2?

Plum Draw!

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 13/10/2001

GRIMSBY TOWN fans have had their dreams come true for beating Liverpool in the Worthington Cup. The Mariners face top notch opposition once again in the Fourth Round, with Town having been paired away against the winners of the Arsenal-Man Utd tie.

Town rocked treble cup-holders Liverpool in midweek in one of the greatest results in the club's entire history, defeating the Reds at "fortress" Anfield with a last minute wonder goal by Town striker Phil Jevons in extra time.

Arsenal and Man Utd, whose Third Round tie was postponed due to European commitments and the USA tragedy, are due to face each other on 7th November, the winner of which will face Grimsby Town at home. Grimsby have a chance to improve both the town and the club's profile, with the 4th round match due to take place on either 28th or 29th November.

Hopefully the fact that such a money-spinning opportunity has arisen will allow the board to consider releasing some cash for Lennie Lawrence. Perhaps Beharall and/or Broomes will be tempted to stay for longer with a game against the Gunners/Red Devils on the horizon.

Full fourth-round draw:

Leeds United v Chelsea
Aston Villa v Sheffield Wednesday
Fulham v Tottenham Hotspur
Blackburn Rovers v Manchester City
Arsenal/Manchester United v Grimsby Town
Bolton Wanderers v Southampton
Watford v Charlton Athletic
Newcastle United v Ipswich Town

Fourth-round ties to be played week commencing Monday, November 26.

Grimsby have not played Manchester United since the 1947-48 season, and they have only played the Gunners once in the last 50 years, when they were famously defeated 4-3 at Blundell Park in the 1985-86 season. Last time Town played at Old Trafford was 53 years ago when they won 4-3, a scoreline that many football fans around the country would love to see repeated!

Arsenal Head-to-Head
Man Utd Head-to-Head

Almost 55% of Grimsby fans had chosen the English champions as their favoured opponents in the next round in this site's exclusive Poll, with just under 10% gunning for North London club Arsenal.
