Where will Grimsby finish?

My Black and White Hero: Kingsley Black

By: Ray Lucas
Date: 30/10/2001

FROM the age of seven, I have had a fascination with the game of football. I remember watching the 1987 League Cup final and being impressed with a young man called Kingsley Black. What impressed me most about him was that he had a determination and drive to succeed.

Imagine my surprise when he joined Brian Clough's Nottingham Forrest revoloution. Sadly, things never worked out for him, and he signed for Grimsby Town in 1997, after a series of loan spells. He brought a large amount of skill to an otherwise mediocre side. In over four years with us, he managed just 9 goals.

I don't mind saying that Kingsley Black is, in my opinion, perhaps the greatest player to wear the black and white stripes. It is testament to his skill that he is still playing football at the age of 33, linking up with former boss Alan Buckley at Lincoln City.

My greatest memory of K.B. came against Crystal Palace. On the substitute's bench, Mr Black spoke to me for over 15 minutes before he joined in the action. My prize possession is a shirt that he signed for me.

Thanks for the great memories Kingsley.
