Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Lawrence Battling To Sign Broomes

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 10/12/2001

WITH the board of Grimsby Town having a meeting today, manager Lennie Lawrence will be waiting anxiously in the wings with a number of clubs chasing the signature of Marlon Broomes.

Lennie Lawrence wants to sign him on a six-month contract after he negotiated a pay-off from Blackburn Rovers. But with Wolves, Leicester City and Birmingham all reported to be interested in him, Lawrence will have to move very quickly if he is to get his man.

Broomes told the Grimsby Telegraph that he would like to stay at Blundell Park but admits if another club put a long-term contract on the table he will put his family's financial security first.

"I've spoken to the chairman and he said to come back on Monday." Broomes told the GET.

There's a board meeting in the afternoon and I hope something can be sorted out so that I can stay until the end of the season. But if another club decides to firm-up their interest and wants to put a two or three-year contract on the table then I couldn't refuse it."

"The club are looking after their best interests and I understand that, but I have to look after mine and the needs of my family."

"I'm more than happy to stay because I've made some good friends and I want to help the lads beat relegation. I feel part of the club and I hope it gets sorted out so that I can stay."

Lennie Lawrence said "Marlon cruised through that game and we need him. With Alan Pouton out for six weeks we can't do without any more players. It's an absolute certainty that we need Marlon."

The board are expected to make a decision this afternoon. The probability is that Lawrence will have to make one or two sacrifices to reduce the wages bill.
