Mark Lever

For a player who didn't cost a sausage - coming up through the youth system, Lever was more than a bargain. Although prone to injuries, Lever was a good, solid player who in the 1998 Wembley season was colossus, forming a partnership with Peter Handyside that was first class. This season, together with his last one, was Lever's best. In his final year, he carried Town through a very sticky patch at the end of the season, when without his presence, Town would have been relegated. Fans were sad to see Lever go, and had Lennie Lawrence been manager when his contract was up, many believe he would have stayed as it was common opinion that the problem with his new deal was not money, but Buckley. The bright side of his career at Town was that he was given a deserved testimonial against Nottingham Forest and fittingly, the man of the match award in Town's proudest hour when they won at Wembley in the Play Off Final in 1998.

Sadly, since then, Mark has not managed to recapture his form with his new club, Bristol City, and was released at the end of the 2001/02 with reports linking him with an imminent move to either Hull City or Mansfield.

Next Player: Peter Handyside
