Question of the Week

Continent 2026 World Cup winners?

A Place In The Stands!

By: Richard Lord
Date: 04/09/2002

DANNY Coyne knows he has only an outside chance of winning a third cap for Wales in their opening Euro 2004 qualifier against Finland. Grimsby's number one keeper admitted that he is likely to watch the game from the stands.

Coyne, along with fellow Mariner Darren Barnard, has been called up to the Welsh squad but the Prestatyn-born shot-stopper is behind Paul Jones, Mark Crossley and Darren Ward in the pecking order.

Speaking to the Grimsby Telegraph the 29-year old said: "The manager told me the reasons for leaving me out last time. I knew what was happening so that was fine. All I'm doing this week is just getting my head down and working hard and waiting to see what happens.

"There are four of us and only two will be involved so I know I'll probably be left in the stands. But that's just the way it is and all I can do is work hard and do my best. I'm under no illusions as to what will probably happen. I've just got to enjoy the week's training and I'm made up just to be back in the set-up."

And Coyne remains adamant that Town's poor start to the season hasn't altered his performances. He continued: "It's not affected my confidence. It's just difficult to take - letting in so many goals.

"We're under no illusions how hard it's going to be this season. But we've been in the situation before and that will help us. That's a bit of an advantage for us. We'll just ride the next few games and hopefully we can start scoring some goals and get some points on the board."

Striker Steven Kabba has been given permission to play in the Worthington Cup for the Mariners. Crystal Palace originally shunned the idea of losing the player's services in the competition but have now made a u-turn on the deal.
