Question of the Week

Who will win League 2?

Stoke Report Card

By: Dr Fishy
Date: 10/02/2003

WHAT a privilege it is to write about a Town win! It makes a change from the usual drab and rather predictable average grades that the players earn from their week to week defeats.

Home > 2002-2003 Season > Report Cards > Stoke (h)

So, a clean sheet, two goals, plenty of chances and above all, three points from a six-pointer. It puts daylight between the Mariners and Stoke for the time being, at least. But for how long?

Coyne: For once his kicking was very good. Never really got tested, thankfully. Read situations well.

Grade: B-

McDermott: The captain out-jumped Iwelumo in the early stages and also held the big striker off the ball on a few occasions. Good solid, all-round performance from Macca.

Grade: B-

Gallimore: It wasn't a bad performance against his old club. His covering at the back was good although he didn't block enough crosses.

Grade: C+

Ford: Appeared to have redeemed himself from the dip in form. Good in the air, strong in the challenge and played some decent passes out of defence.

Grade: B-

Santos: Had Iwelumo in his pocket all afternoon. Job well done.

Grade: B

Cooke: Good at drifting in-field and surging forward. Looked like the creative spark in the team but dwelled too much at times.

Grade: B-

Campbell: Carried the ball well and drifted past three challenges in the second half that nearly led to a great solo goal. Got back well to defend.

Grade: B-

Groves: Played some intelligent balls through to Boulding and sat back in midfield to help soak up the pressure.

Grade: C+

Pouton: This was a superb return to action for the Geordie. Put himself about, challenged anything that moved and set up the first goal.

Grade: B+

Thompson: Won free kicks all afternoon, not that he dived, but he was just a thorn in Stoke's defence. Deservedly got his goal before half time.

Grade: B

Boulding: Signs are that he is nearing full fitness. Took players on for pace - a little too greedy at times - but there were glimpses of what he is capable of. Took his goal well, getting there before the keeper.

Grade: B-

SUBS

Soames: Played direct and caused one or two problems when he had the ball. Got Shtanuk sent off by simply being too fast for him.

Grade: C+

Bolder + Rowan: Came on too late to grade but they played their part in maintaining the lead.

Grade Guide

A*This is almost impossible to achieve as I will refuse to give anyone this grade - unless they score six goals and get opposing players sent off.
AThis is more possible to achieve, although the player must have had a brilliant game i.e. he can't have put a foot wrong all match.
A-The player must have performed superbly, setting up goals, scoring goals, making match-winning tackles etc.
B+The player played to a very high standard indeed having been influential throughout the 90 minutes.
BThis can be achieved if the player had a very good game overall but could be forgiven for making one or two minor mistakes.
B-The player put in a performance worthy of special mention for his efforts on the pitch or otherwise having a good game.
C+A mark for players who have had an average game but at the same time played well in patches and may have had an impact on the final score.
CAn average performance but not worthy of being dropped for the next game - a competent performance.
C-Start thinking about the player's attitude and commitment on the pitch. Showed little effort and was probably invisible for most of the match.
D+Poor game and realistically shouldn't feature in the next game.
DThis player shouldn't be playing in the near future.
D-The player deserves to be fined for his abysmal performance
EThe player should be sacked
F And then shot
