The Rumour Season Commences!

By: Tony Hamilton
Date: 12/05/2003

STUART Campbell warned Grimsby Town that it must keep the current squad together if they have any chance of gaining promotion back to Division One next season.

With most of the current team Town either out of contract or lapsed loanees, Campbell says that a repeat of last summer's exodus could affect the Mariners hopes of promotion next season.

"It's vital if Town want to bounce back they do everything they can to keep the likes of Macca, Galli and Big Georges," he said "There are a lot of the younger lads up too and hopefully the Gaffer and the Chairman will tie them up to with new contracts as well."

Campbell's statement seems to be in line with what Paul Groves has said previously. But so far he has only made three commitments. He wants Santos, Pouton and Macca to stay.

But since then he has made no further announcements about the retained list or about any new signings.

What we do know is that he will be set a budget to sign out of contract players and possibly some new ones but it is doubtful if there will be any news along these lines in the short term.

This is the holiday season and players will be taking time off usually after the cup final so if Groves has any targets, he will have to move either before they go away or wait until they return.

This, of course, gives the fans the chance to get started on the usual signing rumours that they heard from their mother in law's sisters home help or the local butcher who has a season ticket at Ferriby Lane.

Yes, these are exciting times for the football guru's and "those who know someone who knows." But do not let us put you off. There have already been 47 players that Groves is rumoured to be chasing mentioned on the MB and I am sure that we can find a few more.

In the meantime, if we hear any real news, we will keep you informed.
