Football League U-Turn!

By: Tony Hamilton
Date: 05/06/2003

IT was announced today that the Football League have deferred a decision about altering the play-offs until their EGM in September after their plans to restructure the Nationwide promotion system came under pressure from the Premier League and the FA.

The problem that both these governing bodies had with altering the format of the play-offs is that they believed it would be unfair if the 7th or 8th placed club were to gain promotion to the upper echelons of English football.

Although the expansion of the play-offs could happen in the future for the 2nd and 3rd Division, in order to appease the Premier League's concerns it is unlikely to happen for the foreseeable future in the 1st Division, and that league's play off-format will stay at the present four club system.

The debate about sanctions to clubs in administration has also been deferred until September as the clubs agreed there is still a lot to discuss and are hoping to bring themselves in line with the steps the Premier League have in place for this matter. They also said that they would have an insolvency policy discussed at the EGM in September.

The only thing that the clubs did rubber stamp at their meeting was a restructuring of the Football League committee as in the last 12 months this had been neglected partly due to the League not having a Chief Executive during this period. They also agreed to re-market the three divisions of the Football League in the foreseeable future.
