Town v Barnsley Team News

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 23/10/2003

LOAN pair Nicky Daws and Iffy Onuora have returned to their respective clubs whilst Town attempt to either extend their loans or offer them permanent deals. With time ticking away before Grimsby's big clash with Yorkshire rivals Barnsley, Paul Groves must act tomorrow if they are to face the Tykes.

"It's too early to say whether they'll be in the side for Barnsley. The pair of them have grown in their performances since they've been here, and the team has grown with them," the Town boss told the Grimsby Telegraph.

"Everybody showed their appreciation of what Iffy did on Tuesday when he came off. It was a good performance and it was a good end to a good loan spell."

Should Onuora not make it Groves will have to turn to his own squad for a replacement, with Darren Mansaram expected to get the nod over striker Phil Jevons, who has still yet to feature for the first team since sorting out his differences with the club.

In midfield Groves has a number of options as a replacement for Nicky Daws. Graham Hockless, Bolder, or Paul Groves himself could all take the place of Nicky Daws as a direct swap in the centre of midfield.

In other team news John McDermott missed training today with a reoccurrence of an old sciatica problem, but is hoping to be fit to face the Tykes. Utility man Jason Crowe stands by should Macca fail to make it.

Winger Marcel Cas looks likely to start again from the bench as Groves sticks to a winning line-up, as far as he is able to.

Fifth-placed Barnsley, now under new chairman Peter Ridsdale, have, like Town, won their last two games. The game is given an added spice with the presence of former Grimsby defenders Peter Handyside and Tony Gallimore in the Tykes ranks.

The South Yorkshire outfit have Dean Gorre, Rory Fallon, Griff Jones and Neil Austin all pushing for a place after playing for the reserves in midweek.
