Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Fans Have Lost Confidence In Groves!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 09/02/2004

PAUL Groves says he is not a quitter! One would hope that he would change his mind now that the fans of Grimsby Town have given him a massive vote of no confidence!

Surely the most naïve amongst us can see that Paul Groves cannot manage a football team.

Forget all about his loyalty and commitment. The longer he goes on, the less importance it has. In my view, if he was that loyal, he would resign immediately, knowing how badly the Mariners are performing with him in charge.

After each game that we have suffered humiliating defeats, Groves has espoused how we need to turn things around, work harder and start getting results! These platitudes are intended to appease the critics and the fears of the supporters. They are meaningless and serve no useful purpose.

As was pointed out yesterday, the teams that have beaten us badly are not world-beaters. Oldham for example were just a couple of positions above us in the division. But when they play against the Mariners, they are made to look like world-beaters.

Why? Because there appears to be no plan, no tactical nous, no hope and no answer to even the most basic style of football the opposition play.

Mr Groves has failed and failed badly. Even the staunchest of his supporters (are there any left?) cannot deny that.

Sure, we can search for reasons and excuses. The usual one's being; no board backing, no money, players letting him down and so on. But the board made no false promises to him. He knew the financial situation the club was in when he took the job on. He also knew what the player situation was too. He was one of them.

But it is too late for that now. Excuses will not change the position that we are in. Even if Groves goes, a new manager may not be able to change it either. But we have to give a new man at least a chance to get us back in the right direction.

The board must be conscious of that fact. They have given Paul Groves every opportunity to turn things around. He has not succeeded in doing that.

And if it is that time factor that determines the future of Paul Groves then he should go today! Surely the board are not going to wait any longer?
