Question of the Week

Who will win League 2?

Farewell Paul Groves!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 06/03/2004

SURELY now the board must take action and sack Paul Groves or let him fall on his sword? Even his most ardent admirer must now see that his role as manager has been a non-event.

Disregard the score line of some of the recent hammerings we have received, embarrassing as they have been. Groves reign as manager has been a story of poor performances, inconsistency and lack of motivation.

The loss to Port Vale is not because, as some claim, that we lost Pouton, One man does not make a team. Even the loss of Boulding through injury cannot be the cause of the hammering.

The fact is that Grimsby Town are not playing to their potential. We may not be the best team in the league but we do have some good players. The problem is getting those players to play with commitment and they do that rarely. We have a team that looks now as if they do not want to win matches.

The responsibility is that of the manager and Paul Groves knows and acknowledges that.

We can forget any hope of promotion through the play offs. We are looking at a fight to survive in this division and if we carry on as we are now, relegation is a certainty!

Groves must go now! The board have backed him to the full and they deserve praise for that but now they have to make a decision on the future of the club and not on the fate of individuals.

It will be a sad ending for a man whose commitment to the club is not in question, but his abilities are and we cannot afford him the luxury of waiting any longer.

If Paul Groves is still the manager on Monday, the board will have failed in its duty to the club.
