Town's Giants Of The Past - Part 2

By: Simon Dolan
Date: 20/05/2004

FORGET Wembley and all that; AB`s real legacy to this club was the double promotion at the turn of the 90`s. If you can remember that far back then you can remember the real reason that Alan Buckley should be welcomed back with open arms.

In the 1990/91 promotion season, Town were simply awesome, initially surprising everyone by launched straight for the summit after recently being promoted from the 4th division. But they stayed there.

An extra promotion place helped but the fans witnessed football seldom seen since; the likes of fellow promotion chasers Huddersfield completely crushed with football that was simply world class.

The team had been worthless, now it was priceless. An ever-reliable defence with highly promising youngsters Macca, Lever and Jobbers and the magnificent Paul Futcher. A midfield of guile and skill: Cunnington, Cockerill, Childs and Gilbert and the clever Woods and Rees up front.

Sadly Town stumbled at the finishing post and as we all know, a result against Exeter was required in front of 14,000 fans which earned promotion. Not nearly enough I` say - long ball specialists Cambridge and Southend nudged ahead but the title should have been Towns.
