Mr Furneaux Replies!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 25/05/2004

NOW call it a coincidence if you like but the article "Gee! It's Dark In Here" played some part in getting a response from the club. And a very good response too. The statements by Peter Furneaux are just what we were talking about.

Mr Furneaux, on Mariners Net, confirmed that Nicky Law will not be the manager of the Mariners next season, but he also confirmed that a managerial appointment has not yet been made.

"Nicky Law's contract with Grimsby Town expired on the 10th of this month and he has been advised that he will not be re-employed as manager, " he said.

"Nobody has been appointed as manager yet. The situation is under constant review, and we must make sure that the right candidate is available. "We have spoken to some prospective candidates, but only to ascertain whether they would be interested to come to Grimsby."

On applications for the vacant job, Furneaux said: "Some have written in and some we have approached direct. Obviously we cannot name any of these because of confidentiality."

On players out of contract players he said;

"The players that are under 24 have been offered contracts, this retains their registrations with the club.

"We have received recommendations from the Youth Team Coach for the scholars. This will add to the number of youth players that we are paying, but we don't have to make this decision until June."

"A new manager would need to instil a work ethic, combined with people wanting to play for the shirt and not necessarily the wages. The whole situation needs to be brought into line with the division in which we are in, which is certainly different to what we were in two years ago."

The Chairman believes that relegation to the third division will cost the Mariners around £500,000, and he says that the club are expecting crowds of around 4,000.

These statements are very specific and give a clear picture of what the situation is regarding players and the search for a new manager.

Thank you Mr Furneaux!
