Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby be next season?

Grimsby 1 Leeds 1

SO Town faced Leeds United in their third pre-season home game of the season. Leeds, recently of the Premiership, were to prove a big test for the Mariners and Russell Slade's new signings.

Home > 2005-2006 Season > Reports > Leeds (h)

The very early stages belonged to Leeds, knocking the ball around comfortably but they could only muster a few long range shots which were never on target; in fact they had 3 or 4 long range attempts within the first 5 mins, but they never troubled our 'keeper.

Town were eventually getting back into it and were playing some good football. The midfielders were looking for the ball from the defenders and trying to play it along the ground instead of hoofing it long ball in the air to the forwards.

It was from Town's first real attempt that they managed to be the first team in Leeds' pre-season matches to score against them. Some good work in midfield finally ended up with a good through ball along the ground for Reddy (the sort of pass he can work with instead of in the air) racing into the Leeds box he placed he shot low and wide of Leeds keeper.

However our lead could have been very short as Leeds broke forward which ended up with a Leeds player volleyed into the town's side netting with most of the Leeds fans thinking they had scored.

Town continued to play well with Bolland, Kamudimba in midfield, Newey and Cohen as wing backs playing very well, Rob Jones too having the best game I have seen him play for town.

But Leeds did equalise with their only effort on target in the whole match, the ball ended up on their right and the goal scorer controlling well a cross, turning Newey and placing the ball in the top left hand corner. A very good well worked goal.

The second half really belonged to Town with the odd counter attack from Leeds. Town continued to play well and with our midfield getting well involved with everything, a good move ended up with Bolland breaking into the box only to be pulled down with the ref pointing to the spot.

With Newey and Kamudimba discussing who should take the spot kick it was left to Newey, his penalty had plenty of power but was not far enough in the corner and the keeper blocked. Our hoodoo of penalties from last season I hope we are not bringing into this one!

All Town players played particular well, however Andy Parkinson did not impress me and has not all pre-season, maybe Slade should look at playing him on the wing instead of "in the hole".

Gary Cohen was very useful at right wing back, Paul Bolland looked good in midfield with Kamudimba and Rob Jones in my opinion had his best game.

I believe Slade's staring 11 tonight must be very close to his starting 11 against Oxford. I have a strange feeling of optimism which I have not had for a few seasons. Let's bring Oxford United on and let's get going!

Man of match in my opinion : Tom Newey - Could prove Slade's best signing.
