Beat the Bookies: Week 6

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 31/08/2005

ROB Jones' exit from Pride Park on Wednesday meant we never found out whether the big defender would have scored for Grimsby. Few would complain about the eventual result though!

For this week's column the first point of call is, as ever, Grimsby v Stockport. Town are 8/11 with bet365.com to win the game, with the Hatters rated 3-1. If anything Stockport's price is the better value of the two given Grimsby's patchy home form, but the Hatters don't win many and 5/2 for a draw could be worth a punt if you can bear betting against the Mariners!

The first scorer market with bet365.com see my habitual tip Rob Jones having been shortened to 28/1. Perhaps the best value now for the Mariners is Jean-Paul Kamudimba Kalala, Town's penalty taker, who is also 28/1, or 8/1 to score at all in the Friday night game. As well as scoring from the spot, JPKK is also likely to find the target a few times this season, based on what we've seen so far.

Elsewhere on the coupon the bookies have consistently underestimated Scunthorpe this season, and once again the Iron are placed a tempting 10/3 for another away win. However, their opponents this week are league leaders Huddersfield, who could well prove to strong for Brian Laws' side.

The big match in League Two this weekend is Wycombe v Northampton, the battle of the big spenders. After a slightly shaky start, the Cobblers have found their form and recorded some impressive wins in recent games against Carlisle and Boston. In contrast Wycombe, just one point above Northampton, have not won for two games against Shrewsbury and Cheltenham. In the corresponding fixture last year the Cobblers won 1-0, something I think could happen again. bet365.com rate the Cobblers' chances of beating Wycombe as 2-1, which is worth a punt.

For anybody fancying a real shock in the International matches bet365.com make Wales 7/1 to turn over England at home on Saturday. Sven's men are normally very professional in the qualifying matches, but could underestimate the Welsh, who will be desperate to beat their more illustrious neigbours. Are England due an upset (friendlies besides)?
