Gritts: Came Close |
Wycombe Part 2

THE second half started with Mildy being called upon to make a couple of good saves. Gary Jones was hacked down on 49 minutes about 40 yards out but nothing came of the free kick. Wycombe went on a series of attacks as they had in the first half.

On 59, Town earned a free kick outside the penalty box following a foul on Macca. Newey’s kick tested the keeper. On 63, a Parky snap shot just went wide to the left. Gary Jones was replaced by Gritton - both received appreciative applause. With 65 minutes gone, a curled ball came through from midfield. Bolland and the advancing goalkeeper competed for the ball on the right edge of the penalty box. The ball went free but Gritton couldn’t turn it in. The game went from end to end as Mildy saved a header from a corner, and on 66 Wycombe’s Senda almost conceded an own goal with a header. Tradition was maintained on 75 as Newey was booked for a mistimed tackle on Betsy. Shortly after it was bated breath time as Newey committed a foul outside Town’s penalty area, but the referee took no action. The resultant free kick went straight to Wycombe defender Johnson who scored with a bullet header. Grimsby 1, Wycombe 3. A Parky shot on 78 was not helped by Gritton getting in the way. On 80, Cohen was replaced by Andrew, and Newey was replaced by ‘number 20 Gary Croft’. ‘It said in the programme that there wasn’t a number 20 for Grimsby’ protested the indignant Revis. Our very own long life battery Mr. Ever Reddy had another chance on 85, when he tried to curl a cross in but it hit the back of a defender. Town were trying to build up attacks but time was now running out. On 87, Bolland was dispossessed during one of these attacks, leading to a Wycombe breakaway and shot.
The stadium announcer told us to take care in the cold and icy conditions when leaving the stadium. ‘I’ve had an idea! You can buy me some snow boots for Christmas’ exclaimed Revis. No such positive ideas on the pitch though, as Town battled desperately and forlornly. The final whistle was a relief as in time-honoured tradition, Town had lost all shape and a second, let alone a third goal looked impossible. And so the game ended: Grimsby 1, Wycombe 3.
The verdict: it has to be said that we lost to a good side. Town had every opportunity as it was an open game, and at times the passing was good and we looked threatening. Without question, there was a lack of discipline at the back in the absence of the formidable Rob Jones and I felt that Wycombe edged us out in skill, pace, determination and self-discipline. Whilst there were some nice passing movements, it wasn’t always consistent. The midfield couldn’t quite create the chances we needed in the final quarter. Nevertheless, there were some reasonable performances. Newey defended better than I had seen him do in recent games. Macca imposed himself at the back. Mildy made some good saves in goal. Parky provided spark and initiative on the right side of midfield and was edged out for me as our Man of the Match by Michael Reddy, who gave everything and showed skill and determination in a bid to break through the stubborn Wycombe defence.
Yet again disappointed, Revis and I trudged off, taking care as we had been told and looking forward to the warmth of the car. This wasn’t a calamitous performance, but I fear Town’s winter could be cold and harsh winter if we’re not careful.
