Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Should He Stay Or Should He Go?

FOLLOWING Grimsby's failure to secure the promotion their season deserved, attention has turned to the future of the manager Russell Slade and, to a lesser extent, the group of players who are out of contract at the club.

Russell Slade was widely predicted to sign a new three year contract to remain at Blundell Park last week, but it would seem that he pulled out at the eleventh hour. No explanation was given as to why this happened.

How much this unsettled the team ahead of Sunday's big game is open to debate. With many players also playing the last game of their contract at Blundell Park, it's hard to imagine how having a big question mark hanging over the future of their manager can have had anything but a negative affect.

Now, if we are to believe the rumours, a number of managerless clubs are interested in the Town boss. It doesn't take a genius to work out that this is the reason why Slade did not sign his new contract last week.

As he would not show his faith in us before such a big game The Fishy believes that John Fenty and the GTFC board should no longer show faith in Russell Slade, withdraw their contract offer and look elsewhere for a new manager.

Slade has never been popular amongst large sections of the Grimsby faithful due to the direct style of football he favours. Despite the team's elevated position in the league table this season, crowds have been disappointing this year at Blundell Park, home results have not been great, and this can largely be attributed to the manager's style of play.

To Slade's credit he has brought some good players to the club, most of whom have been plucked out of obscurity. However, with many of Town's better players likely to also leave the club in the summer, the job of rebuilding the side may actually benefit from a completely fresh set of ideas.

Town financially are far more stable than when Russell Slade arrived and there will doubtless be no shortage of prospective managers out there.
