By: Richard Hubbert
Date: 29/07/2006

WITH the new season almost upon us, it's time to cast an eye upon the teams in League Two for 2006-2007. Richard Hubbert turns his attention to Darlington.

Key PlayerMartin Smith. The signing of the ex Northampton and Sheffield Utd Manchester City could turn out to be an astute one for Hodgson. Smith struggled last season with injury, but he has an excellent scoring ratio. Together with fellow new signing Barry Conlon, he could help form a formidable strike partnership.
StrengthsDarlington have a decent squad at their disposal and have bought some excellent players over the summer. It's also clear that they have cash at their disposal - as their bid for Carlisle's Michael Bridges demonstrated. Last season, they just missed out on the play offs, but with an injection of experienced players over the summer, they could well challenge at the top end of the table.
WeaknessesMany times over recent years, Darlington have promised so much and ultimately failed to deliver. Do they have the bottle? Furthermore, speculation over the future of manager Dave Hodgson won't help stabilise and move the club forward.
Prediction3rd. This promises to be an excellent season for the men from the Williamson Motors Stadium. As the Mariners have found out in recent seasons - they can be a tricky side to beat.

Next Team: Grimsby
