Beat the Bookies: Week 7

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 05/09/2006

WALES failed to cause an upset last week in Prague meaning Beat the Bookies selection didn't come up, but at least we were right that the Mariners would not lose to Macclesfield.

This weekend the Mariners play unbeaten Walsall, who will probably be the toughest League Two opponents to come to Blundell Park yet this season. Although Town are yet to lose at home in the League, that record will be seriously threatened on Saturday by the in-form Saddlers. bet365.com once again make Town the favourites to win at 11/8. Walsall are 17/10, and the draw is 11/5. At those odds a draw is probably the best bet.

Elsewhere in League Two there are some interesting games. Wrexham face leaders Swindon at the Racecourse Ground, where the Red Dragons are traditionally very strong. Swindon are on fire at the moment, but a home win at 9/5 is well worth a punt at that price.

In the Premiership Middlesborough travel to Arsenal, where the Gunners went close to losing to Villa in the opening fixture at the Emirate Stadium. Boro, who have already beaten Chelsea, are 9/1 to come away with all three points. Another possible upset is Tottenham to win at leaders Old Trafford, which is available at 6/1. Martin O'Neil's Aston Villa are a possible dark horse this season in the top flight, and at 5/2 are worth backing to win at Upton Park, where the Hammers blow hot and cold bubbles.

Recommended Bets

  • 1. Grimsby to draw with Walsall (11/5 with bet365.com).
  • 2. Aston Villa to beat West Ham (5/2 with bet365.com).
