The Sky's the Limit

IN front of the Sky cameras Town put in a good account of themselves at home to Hereford, with new boy Andy Butler starting in his first game on a month’s loan from neighbours Scunthorpe.

The centre back who signed late last week came straight into the side at the expense of Justin Whittle who was injured. This meant a centre back pairing of Nick Fenton and Andy Butler.

With Justin Whittle missing, Macca took up the skipper’s armband in this unusual 4pm Sunday afternoon kick off. Town kicked off attacking the away end that contained approx 150 away fans and a blow-up doll that had made the trip from Hereford for some pre-match "entertainment".

Both teams early on were testing each other out with neither side creating much. The first proper attack saw good work from Town, in particular Tony Thorpe who led the ball to be knocked out to the left where Gary Jones was able to volley it into the roof of the net from a tight angle to make it one nil.

From then on both teams were pretty evenly matched with some long range efforts. Fenton had a good chance from a Town corner whilst Peter Bore and Ciaran Toner were looking threatening on the wings. Nick Fenton also have a good game at centre back. However Hereford were beginning to push Town back and it was no surprise when they equalised, however the manner was slightly surprising.

New loan signing Andy Butler raced into a tackle in the Town box but was nowhere near the ball, and only succeeding in bringing the Hereford player down, a sure penalty.

Purdey blasted the ball into the roof of the net giving the keeper no chance.

In the second half Town came out unchanged. They looked the more confident of the two teams in second period and the most likely to score. Both Toner and Bolland had decent efforts saved by their keeper and Butler was not far away with a header from a corner that sailed just over.

Hereford were limited to a couple of long range efforts that flew just over and wide. However, it was Town that got the killer second goal. Some good hold up work in the box by Thorpe saw him get a shooting opportunity which he did not take, instead opting to go for a sliding pass to an unmarked Jones who coolly slotted home first time from 10 yards out.

After that Jones had a chance late to make it three but his tame shot was easily saved by their keeper and Ravenhill after wining two tackles found himself in the box looking for support. However with nobody available he opted to shoot and the ball was deflected out for a corner off an in-rushing Hereford defender.

Overall probably one of Town’s best performances at home, still room for improvement but today was just about a much needed three points, some good performances in terms of Fenton, Bolland, and Thorpe but for Gary Jones scoring twice, man of the match has to go to him.

Man Of The Match Gary Jones.
