Question of the Week

Who will win League 2?

March Player of the Month

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 03/04/2007

THE Mariners won their first three matches of March to make a late charge for the play-offs, but reality kicked in during the month's final two games in which Grimsby were twice defeated.

Home > 2006-2007 Season > Player of the Month > March

The six players nominated by our readers for the March Player of the Month award, votes from which will count towards the eventual winner at the end of the season, are as follows:

Phil Barnes - Although still dodgy on crosses, Barnes has won a lot of votes in the last couple of games when Town's 'keeper helped to keep the score down. Also played his part in the three opening clean sheets of March.

Nick Fenton - Mr dependable at the back, Town's best defender and a strong contender for player of the season.

James Hunt - Hunt's passing and workrate in midfield have been excellent in recent weeks and the on-loan Pirate will be missed if he departs for good in the summer.

Danny North - Has spent much of the month as a lone striker in Alan Buckley's recent 4-5-1 fad, where it is fair to say he has often been anonymous up front. Despite that Northy has frequently come into his own when the Mariners have switched to 4-4-2, hence his nominations.

Ciaran Toner - Toner has improved dramatically since Buckley took charge, and has added goals to his game in recent weeks. Not won himself many friends following recent speculation about his future, but would be a valuable squad member next season. The winner of last month's competition by a mile.

Justin Whittle - Whitts is a no-nonsense defender who has formed a commanding partnership with Nick Fenton in central defence. Out of contract in the summer, but likely to remain at the club for at least another year.

Pleas vote using Question of the Week.

Nominations for Player of the Month are made using the Man of the Match form at the end of match reports. Every vote for Player of the Month counts towards the Player of the Season at the end of the year.
