Preview: Grimsby v Wycombe

TOWN entertain an out of form Wycombe at Blundell Park looking for a second straight win after an impressive 2-1 victory at MK Dons on Saturday.

After relegation from Division Two along with Town in 2003/4, ’The Chairboys’ have tried in vain to gain promotion. They finished 10th in 2004/5 in the newly named ‘League Two’ under the guidance of John Gorman, and began last season with a 21-match unbeaten run lasting until December which was ended by Bury. The sale of top goalscorer Nathan Tyson to Nottingham Forest added to off the pitch setbacks such as the deaths of Young Striker Mark Philo and John Gorman’s wife resulted in a turbulent few months. At one point it looked as if they might not even make the play-offs, but after finding some form at the end of the season they finished 6th. Despite finishing below Grimsby and Cheltenham they began the play-offs as favourites to win promotion, but they were knocked out by eventual play off winners Cheltenham in the semi-finals 2-1 on aggregate. Former Scotland and Celtic captain Paul Lambert took control of managerial duties in the summer.
After just missing out on promotion in the playoff semi-finals last season, Wycombe began this season in fine form with 11 wins in their first 22 games. They also reached the semi-finals of the Carling Cup upsetting premiership duo off Charlton and Fulham along the way. They were knocked out by eventual winners Chelsea 5-1 on aggregate after a 1-1 draw at Adams Park, and a 4-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge where they were backed by 4,500 fans. Wycombe’s league form has been somewhat unpredictable since, with losses against Torquay and Mansfield coinciding with convincing wins over Bury, Wrexham and Macclesfield. Town's hoodoo Tommy Mooney (left) unfortunately still plays for Wycombe and is expected to start at Blundell Park.
Jermaine Easter (left). The Welsh international front man was signed from Stockport County in January 2006 after spells with Wolves, Boston and Hartlepool. He scored only 2 goals in the remaining games of the season but has been in great form this term, netting 22 times in all competitions, including goals in each round of the Carling Cup. His 22 minute hat-trick against Bury in August is the fastest ever by a Wycombe player, and he made his full Welsh debut in January. This season he has formed formidable partnerships with veteran striker Tommy Mooney who has scored 13 times this season, and the recently signed Scott McGleish from Northampton who has netted 3 times in 8 games since his move from Sixfields.

There have only ever been 11 meetings between the two sides, with Wycombe proving to be something of a bogey side for the Mariners. The only Town win came in the 2003/4 season with a 3-1 win at Blundell Park, a season in which both teams went on to be relegated to League Two. A bumper crowd of over 7,000 for this Friday evening game saw Wycombe steal Points and leapfrog Town to the summit of League Two with an 11th minute header from old foe Tommy Mooney. Wycombe somehow held out in the 2nd half as Town threw everything at their goal, and took all three points back to Adams Park.
