Arise Sir Macca
Arise Sir Macca

Goodbye Macca

By: Dave Boylen
Date: 12/04/2007

I suppose it had to happen, it's nearly the end of John McDermott's illustrious career. There are only two home games left to pay your respect to one of the most loyal players Grimsby Town have ever had on their books.

To play in the region of seven hundred and fifty two games for one club in this age of contracts not meaning a thing just shows you how loyal Macca has been to Grimsby Town.

I hope that the club can give Macca a role on the coaching side, or even the scouting. I do believe that Alan Buckley is short in that direction. The main problem is that Grimsby Town are not a rich football club and they just cannot invent jobs that are not there, even in the case of Macca, who I still think has a lot to offer the club. There is a school of thought that Macca fancies playing in the non-league for a couple of years to "pay the bills".

If I was him I would stay at Grimsby Town if given the chance. Once you leave the Football League status it is very hard to get back. Until he can get a decent position within the club he might just have to muck in with a number of tasks to supplement his salary within the Football Club.

Things change so quickly in football, just look at Town this year. The season never really got started, out went Graham Rodger, in came Alan Buckley and we all know what happened. We started well then went into free fall with I think seven successive defeats. Then it all changed round again. Town went on a very lucrative spell of winning games, which at one time looked like we could get in the play-offs.

It looks like The Mariners will finish half way up the league which we can all be happy with. Going back to Macca I hope that he does play in these last two home games against Barnet and arch rivals Lincoln City, so the genuine supporters can pay their respect to one of the most loyal footballers that has ever played for Grimsby Town. He is a genuine nice lad and I have been privileged to know him, helped him to organise his two benefit games which were a success, and he in turn has helped me out with my charity evenings.
