"No disrespect to the likes of Grimsby..."

Grim Northern Trip of the Week

From the London Evening Standard

Grimsby Town play in neighbouring Cleethorpes, a faded seaside town that makes Scarborough look like Monaco. The good times never did hit Cleethorpes but you can't fault the locals' optimisim. The amusement arcades remain open in darkest December attracting fewer customers than the Bates motel. Blundell Park is the closest football ground to the sea in the country, and subsequently the coldest, but don't be fooled by the scenic view. The mud-coloured beach is condemned in The Good Beach Guide and the town deserves to be.

Grimsby are auctioning limited-edition bed linen in a desparate attempt to raise some money and Millwall fans are advised to pack their pillows for a game that could easily send spectators to sleep. Mark McGhee's side will be happy with a point from a long trip after an eventful week, while the Mariners rarely entertain. The local fish and chips will be the best thing on the menu.

Verdict: BORE DRAW"

The Old Firm

From Socceritis

The only solution is for the Glasgow giants to begin in the Nationwide at the start of the 2004-05 season. No problem for the division one chairmen who will welcome the extra publicity and revenues from having to play four times a season, against Rangers and Celtic as opposed to Rotherham and Grimsby (no disrespect intended); with the perceived upturn in TV revenue once more adding another welcome bonus, since the ITV Digital collapse. No problem for Celtic and Rangers either, for what should be one, two seasons at a maximum, when the huge publicity of the switch to the English League will more than compensate for the fact they are starting in the secondary division without as many European carrots on offer.

Coventry City

From CWN - News & Information for Coventry & Warwickshire

Then we get back to the reality of the First Division fixture list when our next opponents are Grimsby Town. No disrespect to the good people who provide me with my favourite fresh fish, but one season in the same league as Grimsby Town is one season too many.
