I reckon England will accelerate with there score now with stokes in.

Edit just seen on bbc stokes hits a six, I like stokes does get the run rate going and likes to ruffle opposition up a bit.

Poor session after tea puts the Aussies on top for my money. It's a flat pitch and yet they are into the tailenders. Still, can't complain too much as they had us reeling this morning. Will all depend on how we bowl to them now.

I don't think it's too bad from England all things considered with the pitch doing one or two strange things. I was disappointed with Cook's wicket from a nothing ball from an average bowler in Lyon. You expect more from Cook.
Overall I think it's a pretty evenly balanced Ashes. All to play for.

I think they'd probably talked so much about getting after Lyon that Cook ended up trying to cut a ball which just wasn't there. Think it's very even all in and would have taken it at 43-3. Be nice to get 400+. Moeen key I guess.

Well as always, we won't know if it's a good score 'til the Aussies have a bat. Aussies just slightly on top for me at this stage. Need a good morning session tomorrow.

Yeah I agree mate. I think 400+ will be a very good first innings total all things considered and puts pressure on the Aussies, which they'll feel even more keenly if they are already 2 or 3 down once they reach 100 or so. I'd say we're in an pretty good position at the end of day 1.

It looks like a good day for batting weather-wise tomorrow, and for Friday too, which will help the Aussies, but if the final day does bring plenty of rain/bad light, as looks likely from the forecast, you'd possibly conclude that a draw might be on the cards, but, as Ginny pointed out, if we bowl well to them in the first innings we could win the game from the platform of today's position.

Bear in mind that 6 years ago at Franklin Gardens, we thought 435 was a decent first innings score - until they got 674 before declaring when they batted! I went to the 2nd and 3rd days and saw one session of England batting followed by two days of Aussies piling on the runs. As you can imagine, the Aussie fans were insufferable.

Another parallel is that we finished the first day on 336-7. Near as damnit to 2009 so far. Let's hope for the same result in the series.

Yup. Obviously they could skittle our final 3 wickets for a sub 400 score in the morning and then bat us into a hole on Thursday and Friday. We'll see. I'm happy to able to say, it could go either way, rather than that feeling it was inevitable that we would capitulate in an all too familiar kind of way. I don't think they are owt spesh, with a bat or a ball.

Me neither, which is why i can't understand most saying they are clear favourites. Our team of a few seasons ago would roll this lot over no problem but we are in a re-building phase at present which makes it interesting and could go either way for me. Whoever gets the key moments and/or luck with the weather will prevail.
