According to the Mail Online Sheffield United, Palace & Brighton are showing interest in Mattie Pollock - no big surprise there I guess.

He's been excellent, big solid and can play a bit as well. He is a very big lad though and isn't the quickest, that may hold him back. That said, look at Harry Maguire.

As I recall he's got 1 year left on a 2 year contract. So if the sharks do swoop  we could make a few bucks here - as long it's not Barry Fry & Peterborough leading us up the garden path again.

We should ask £3,000,000 for him. £4,000,000 if its Sheffield United or another Yorkshire club though.....

Talking of Pollock dooes anyone play fifa? If you train him up his rating goes up very quickly, never seen it before. I've just started a season with Everton now, gave town £2m for him and developed him to 65 and I'm only half way through the first season.

Fifa, load of bottom. Why's it a football management game now? Training? Signings? Load of bottom. Pick your team and play the game. Anyway, I digress.

Everyone just assuming there is some truth to this then?

National papers don't exactly get much right about the lower leagues do they. I remember the Liam Hearn to Chelsea story

Not surprised Pollock is interesting bigger clubs, an old head on young shoulders.

Also if he keeps on improving Max Wright will start attracting the interest of bigger clubs, we have to accept we are a feeder club and selling them will keep us in business.

Until a sugar daddy takes over the club of course.

Harry Maguire is hardly the quickest and Matty is a similar build. Playing for utd in the future might be a big ask but we got a good fee for Ryan Bennett in the past and he has proven he can cut it at the highest with 3 premier league clubs, so if we was to let him go we should hold out for the best price.
Hes also the brightest talent from our youth system for years

Been attracting scouts from way beyond when he was with us and even more since turning pro. Never really saw him as a player who would be with us for long after watching him play, was apparently giving it the big un to a few friends around the club too last season that big clubs are tracking him. Clearly sees us as a stepping stone. We've been getting good value for investing in him as a young player with potential though so hopefully we can sell him for a good deal.

Big clubs want young players now, not in a year. They'll want to develop him and see what he can do. He's not worth big enough bucks for a year to make any real difference.

Is there an option on his contract? Even if not, he can't leave for free if we offer him a new deal.

Of course he can! When his contract's run out he can do what he wants.

I believe his age dictates we would still receive something although again, the thinking of not worrying about getting him on a lengthy extension is quite naive and blasé.

Personally I’d be offering a two year extension on slightly improved terms year on year with a signing fee. That would likely benefit and protect both us and him.

Then the time is right call in him slap £250 a week on his wages for a2 year extension with the promise that we will not hold him back ( and why should we if a decent wedge is on offer)

Sadly, we are not in any sort of financial position to give Mattie much more than he's already on.

Any 'big' club interested in signing him will know there's f-all money in the fourth division right now. They'll offer a paltry amount and we'll accept it because if this goes to a tribunal, we'll get shafted anyway.

Or we'll forget to offer him terms that are at least the same as what he was on, Danny Butterfield style.

He could go to Sheffield United, earn £5k a week and not play a single competitive game for 3 years before bouncing around League 1 and League 2 for the rest of his career knowing that he is made for life. Or alternatively, he could sign a 3 year deal here and earn in 3 years what he could have earned at Sheffield United in 3 months!

Sheff Utd sign him, they initially give us £1 million, that gives the club some breathing space at the moment, they then loan him back to us for this coming season, with them picking up his wages, then next close season take him full time, also giving us another £1 million, with a 25% selling on clause. Gosh, this transfer game is bloody easy, wonder why Mr Fenty makes it appear difficult.

Exactly, and have better facilites, and better coaches.

I would love him to stay and develop in the first team here, but it's hard to stay on £300? a week, when a top club could potentially offer him 15x more money

Clearly the lads got potential but at 18 years old (I think) and a similar number of first team games talk of £1 million+ fees seem a little far fetched for a defender.

Then again as they say “it’s a funny old game”.

Let’s just hope nobody puts in a call to the EFL when the time comes as it inevitably will.

In normal times I’d have guessed at somewhere between £500k and £750k with addons. He’s played a lot less senior football than Ryan Bennett had when we sold him, and he was also our captain (rightly or wrongly).

Clearly the market has inflated massively since then, particularly in the top flight, but PL clubs will be well aware of the desperate times facing clubs like Town, and don’t expect them to be empathetic or selfless about that.

The big thing for Town will be how many clubs show serious interest, if any of course. Ultimately, I think we’ll be prepared to take a smaller overall package that secures more cash up front than any deal loaded with future instalments and add-ons.

I hate how clubs like Town are forced to sell their young players as soon as they show a modicum of talent, but right now we shouldn’t underestimate how big a deal the sale of Mattie Pollock and any sell on money for Dembele, should either materialise, would be for the club.

If I’m not mistaken, both were brought into the club on Russell Slade’s watch. Christ almighty, wouldn’t it just be mental if the folically challenged PE teacher somehow managed to leave one of the most important legacies in the club’s long history!?

We are always going to sell talent like Bennett and Pollock. I’d imagine Holloway is shrewd enough to make sure we don’t get shafted. Is he good enough? No-one can be sure yet, but he is going to be a beast of a Centre Back at whatever level he peaks at. Let’s hope for us it’s in the Premier and we get decent wedge for his services.
One person in all this that deserves huge credit is Neil Woods, he’s got a great eye for youth players.

Batch, Crombie, Moore K, Wiggington, Cumming, Waters, Bonnyman, Ford, Emson, Drinkell, Whymark. Love you all, You are the reason I'm on here. You've had help from Todd, Handyside, Futcher P, Groves, Mendonca, Macca etc etc etc. Up The Mariners!!!!!!!!!

I think some folk missed the point of upping his wages and extending his contract...

It isn’t to keep him from signing for a bigger club, more to with them having to fork out more, allowing us and him to negotiate a better deal.

Let’s not forget that his dad played at the top level and has clearly been giving him great support so far. Personally, I’d have Pollock in my starting 11. No doubt he has things to learn, yes, he lacks a bit of pace but with the right coaching and playing experience I honestly believe he will get better.

Again, this is only a good thing for us and him.

The lunacy of big money transfers in the Premiership is alive and well. Check out Sheffield United re-signing the goalkeeper they once sold for £800k for over £18 million now Henderson's decided to stay at Old Trafford.

If I’m not mistaken, both were brought into the club on Russell Slade’s watch. Christ almighty, wouldn’t it just be mental if the folically challenged PE teacher somehow managed to leave one of the most important legacies in the club’s long history!?

If Pollock went to tribunal we wouldn't get a fortune because he bounced around a number of clubs as a youngster and only signed for us at 16. In a year we are only responsible for 3 years of his footballing education. We would probably get more at tribunal for Wright who has been here since wearing nappies.

I believe Bennett signed a decent contract before we sold him didn't he?

If he signed 3 year extension, not inly does his wage get better it also ensures the buying club will have to pay more to buy his services.
Mattie would be the winner , pay rise or huge pay rise. It helps him and it helps the finances of the club.

How many 18 year old centre backs play in any of the 4 top divisions in the country? not bloody many and he looks pretty mature too. i would imagine by the time hes 27/28 approaching his prime his reading of the game will be much better and he will be much stronger too. at centre back pace is not really relevant as it would be at say left back. its reading the game that counts.

Do you really think he'd potentially hinder his own chances of earning a big money move by signing a slightly improved contract for us? There is zero incentive for him to do that, unless he somehow loves the club so much that he put GTFC before his own career. The only reason to sign a new improved contract is if he thinks he won't be going anywhere else.

The best way for us and him to get a better deal is to have multiple clubs battling for his signature. Then play them off against each other until the highest bidder remains.

Aye, a four year deal in the summer of 2009 (he signed for Peterborough (permanently) in January 2010).

At least this is a positive topic, unlike some clubs who are uncertain if they will survive.

For all the money that Prem clubs have, they are reluctant to pay even small sums and take a risk on a good player in the lower-leagues.  Jamie Vardy scored goals for fun and had great pace.  Leicester eventually paid a £1M for him.  He played for England, won the Prem and at 33 still has pace and regarded (by his manager) as one of the best strikers in the world.  (Strangely, I was told last night by a Bolton fan that Micky Mellon encouraged Sam Allydyce to buy Vardy for a million.  He bitterly regrets not buying him).

No top Prem club bought Van Dijk from Celtic.  (Bar Southampton for a bargain).  Not proven in the Prem. When he was..............

Mattie might not peak as a CB for around 10 years.  Surely, clubs have learnt from the Vardy purchase and more willing to take a gamble for someone who might surprise everybody?   Nobody like to miss out.

Small risk v potential good return. At his age they could also sell-him on and recover their investment or make a profit?

If this virus allows us to play the whole season I am sure Matty will play in most of the games.

That will alert more clubs to take an interest and hopefully start a bidding war.

Whatever happens Matty will make a success of his career and I wish him well.

BUT

Hopes he stays with us to help us go up this season.

Problem is he’s out of contract after this season and they’ll sign him and just pay us a measly compensation sum, if we’ve worked out that we have to offer him an improved deal first.

Aston Villa, Newcastle, Leicester and Watford also now linked with an interest.

Don't we have an option of another year ?

BUT

I agree that he should be offered a new contract because he deserves one.

It won't stop clubs coming in for him if they really want him.

I would have thought all Premier league clubs would have better youngsters on their books but if they have money to burn to take a gamble then let's cash in.

Disclaimer.  When Ryan Bennet kept shanking clearances into the Findus I did not think he would make a career out of  the game.

That is not as bad as the bloke next to me who used to slag off Kevin Drinkell when he broke into the team.

All great players but the majority also played in a time where you could kick a striker from behind or pull him to slow him down and get away with the ref giving you a tut. Nowadays it’s an automatic booking and on a knife edge.

Very few who make it to the top level nowadays without at least some pace. Maguire is possible one of the exceptions

On a more home based note, Paul Futcher was a great reader of the game but certainly had no pace. But, as has been mentioned, a good reader of the game is worth a yard of pace and possibly more.

I can see the Maguire comparisons. Both are well built and read the game well.

The biggest chance of that path following is a £1m transfer to a lowly Premier League club such as Burnley in exchange for Pollock, Glennon and Benson on loan this season.

Fast forward a few years and Burnley sell Pollock to Man Utd for £81m and we get a nice £16m thanks to a 20% sell-on fee! Knowing our luck though, Barry Fry would get a job at Burnley.

Quite. Our John gets a fúcking hard time on here, often for good reason. But Town did incredibly well out of the Bennett deal when he signed for Norwich - I’m not sure where the false narrative we got screwed by Peterborough originates.

I do recall that there was some discord over the terms of the original payments, and Peterborough did try (and fail) to buy out his sell on fee, but all in all I think Town made the best part of £2m in selling Ryan Bennett. Not bad for a teenager sold over ten years ago.

I seem to recall at the time, Fry said Fenty was instrumental in Peterborough being able to sell Bennett to Norwich. Not disputing that we didn't get the sell-on but I recall some form of discussion went on. We probably negotiated a late payment or something.

We'll get shafted, lower league teams always do. Undisclosed fee probably no more than £150k in the current climate. Unless we can tie him down to a long term deal with a release fee built into it.

Jarrad Branthwaite went to Everton from Carlisle for around the £1million mark, he was 17 years old.

And how much game time did he get since.  Mattie would be better off staying here, getting regular games, until atleast 23, as he will only be playing reserve football or going out on loan.

If he is as good as people think, there is no chance we could hold onto him for another 5 years.

Another season here probably would benefit him, but not 5 if he has ambitions of premiership level.

He needs first team football to develop. We have good coaches so he's in a good place here.

If we go up, we might get another 12 months out of him but realistically I don't see him staying much longer than another 18 months. At that point you would expect him to be closing in on 100 games if he's good enough.

If he gets the chance to go to the Premier League, he should take it.  Worst case he'd get loaned out, play some U23 or a mix of both.  As good as our coaches are here, the facilities, other players and opportunity of being in a top level squad are too good to pass up on.  He might not get the chance again.

Ollie is on the case as we speak. Hey up Ed Woodward, our lot reckon we've got the next Maguire and I hear Maguire is going to be smashing plates and eating olives for the foreseeable future. How does a cut price £40m sound?

Maguire arrested in Greece.  Maybe Man U might need to buy Pollock as the new Maguire?
