Coyne Signs Two Year Extension

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 19/07/2001

GRIMSBY TOWN'S player of the year Danny Coyne has agreed a two year extension to his contract with the Mariners. The 27-year-old shot stopper, who already had a year left on his contract, is now tied to playing for Grimsby for the next three seasons.

The development almost finalises manager Lennie Lawrence contract talks with the existing squad, and although the ex-Luton boss failed to persuade Peter Handyside to stay at the club, the securing of Coyne's signature for the forseeable future is a huge bonus for Grimsby Town supporters.

A delighted Danny Coyne told Mariners Net: "Everything in the papers has been speculation and I'm just happy to sign a two year extension to the one year I had left, so it keeps me here for three years. It's nice for everything to be sorted both for the club and for myself, and just I'm looking forward to go to Sweden tomorrow."

At one stage Coyne had been widely tipped to depart this summer, with the club being expected in some quarters to cash in on their most valuable asset before next summer when he would have been free to leave Blundell Park as a Bosman.

A host of clubs including Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa, Tranmere and Bolton were linked with the Welsh International goalkeeper, who incredibly was overlooked for international recognition by Wales boss Mark Hughes, despite a string a superb displays between the sticks last season for Grimsby.
