Local MPs back new stadium for the Mariners

Local MPs, Austin Mitchell, Shona McIsaac and Ian Cawsey have issued the following joint statement regarding the proposal for a new stadium for Grimsby Town Football Club.

"Having looked at the details of the planning application to be considered by North East Lincolnshire Council on the 25th January we all feel that it is important to this area that these plans are approved.

It is clear that the club needs a new stadium to secure a long term viable future and to give supporters the very best modern facility to watch them play. The site at Great Coates will provide good transport links, bring in excellent community facilities and new retail provision for the area. The safeguards for local residents will ensure there is the minimum of disruption and we welcome the emphasis the club is placing on being a good neighbour. In recent times a number of clubs, including both Hull City and Scunthorpe United have successfully relocated to new stadia. We cannot allow the Mariners to be left behind and urge North East Lincolnshire Council to approve this application on the 25th.

There will still be a job to do with the Regional Government Office if approval is granted but we stand ready to give the club every assistance to ensure progress is made as quickly as is possible.

A new stadium is not just good for the club but as we have seen in other areas can act as a hub for all kinds of regeneration in the surrounding area. This is an exciting project that deserves support and we are wholeheartedly behind the Board and the Club in their endeavours.
