Full Moon at Blundell Park

GRIMSBY thrashed a poor Notts County side 4-0 to set up a fine festive period for the Mariners. Town though were not at their best and lacking key players, but they made the most of their chances and the opposition's mistakes to chalk up a resounding scoreline.

Verman and Cook were both unavailable, the former with a potentially serious illness, which meant Harry Cardwell made a rare start up front. Danny Collins was also injured so Alex Whitmore returned at the heart of Town's defence.

Town got off a perfect start when Cardwell turned and fired in the box and Clifton reacted quickest to head in the rebound. Notts County had a lot of possession but Town always looked dangerous on the counterattack with Thomas outstanding as an outlet up front for the Mariners.

Grimsby Town fans are in for a Merry Christmas following this afternoon’s stunning 4-0 victory against Notts County at Blundell Park.

Youth graduate Harry Clifton gave the Mariners a perfect start when he headed in a third goal of the season on three minutes.

Harry Davis then made it two shortly before the break, and Town never looked back as they went on to record a sixth victory in seven home games, with Davis and Wes Thomas adding some second-half festive shine.

Embleton forced a low save from the 'keeper and from the ensuing corner Town gave themselves daylight when Davis made it 2-0 after the ball was flicked on and he scrambled in a header.

McKeown made a good save to deny Thomas at the start of the second half then a Whitmore slip presented Jon Stead with a glorious chance in front of goal but he sliced his effort wide.

Town scored again from a set piece to put the game to bed. Davis was left unmarked at the far post and had an easy chance to put Town 3-0 up.

Town managed one more goal when a good Town move ended with a shot by Thomas that went straight through the County 'keeper.

The win leaves Town roughly equidistant between the play-offs and the relegation zone with the season at its halfway point. Although recent home results have been impressive the win today belied the growing injury list and the very inexperienced bench Grimsby were forced to employ.
