Town Rue Mistakes

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 08/11/2025

GRIMSBY threw away two points at Barrow with two goalkeeping mistakes that saw them surrender a two-goal lead. Town had raced into an early position with 2 goals from Rose and Green in the first 15 minutes.

The Mariners looked comfortable until they conceded one just before the break, and they missed several chances in the second half to make it 2-1, only to concede again through a Pym mistake with 15 minutes to go from another long-range strike.

David Arttell made three changes from the side that beat Ebsfleet, bringing in Warren, Green and Kabia for Lavelle, Sweeney and Walker.

Grimsby started strongly and scored with their first sustained attack, which saw Vernam's ball to Rose, initially saved before being played back in by Kabia and eventually making its way to Rose to score with a stooping header at the far post.

Town fans were soon in dreamland when Rodgers picked out Green in space, and he cleverly chipped the 'keeper to make it 2-0.

Grimsby could have scored more with Kabia and Rose having chances, and Barrow not really testing Pym. That was to change when the ball fell to Harper and he hit a low strike from outside the box, with the flight of the ball deceiving Pym in what should have been a routine save.

Grimsby have several chances to make it 3-1 after the break, with Khouri and Rose both having good chances. Barrow, though, struck a similar goal to the first one, this time via McCann, but Pym did not even have the excuse of it travelling through a crowded box, as the ball came straight to him and went right through Town's keeper to the delight of the home fans behind him. The equaliser lifted the home side, but Town managed to rally with the help of substitutions and get the game back under control

Town could have rescued the game when a great chance fell to Amaluzor at the death, but in the end, they had to settle for a point. They should probably have scored more than 2 goals, but will be disappointed to have conceded 2 from the chances that Barrow created.
