"No disrespect to the likes of Grimsby..."

friday 20th october

Dr Henry Kissinger
From The Times Diary

That admirer of realpolitik, Dr Henry Kissinger, is a Grimsby Town FC supporter. Over lunch at Christopher's, the Covent Garden eatery, I am told a splendid tale about how in the mid-Seventies the then US Secretary of State used to join his friend, the late Anthony Crosland, on the terraces to watch the Mariners.

The former Foreign Secretary, an early fan of football chic, enthused about the game. and, as the MP for Grimsby, felt he should back the local team. Kissinger also loves the game and used Air Force One to fly him into a USAF base in Lincolnshire to catch up with his friend at matches. Could this be why he lobbied so hard to bring the World Cup to the United States in 1994?

From The Observer
Knowing the First Division Escape Route

The First Division has some peculiar quirks, which means that if you are to get out of it, you need to know how to get a result at the likes of Grimsby and Stockport as well as beating bigger teams such as Blackburn and Wolves. Joe Royle is another manager who knows what it is all about, and he has been successful at Manchester City because he is probably the first manager in a long time to understand how boardroom politics work.

Waves where Britannia still rules

Proud naval traditions live on at Dartmouth, but Vic Marks finds it can be a haven for landlubbers too

Those naval boffins of old were not that stupid. They didn't set up their training college at Grimsby or Hartlepool, but on the idyllic south coast of Devon at Dartmouth. There the commanders, if not the busy young officers, could luxuriate above a picturesque little harbour and a wide estuary that carves through the gentle rolling hills of the South Hams.
