Who will win League 2?

Allen Out for the Season!

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 16/12/2000

Grimsby Town striker Bradley Allen faces an anxious wait to determine whether he will require an operation to correct an ankle injury. If the operation is required Grimsby's top marksman would be out for the rest of the season.

The 29 year old Londoner, who has featured just twice for the Mariners since the start of November, has been diagnosed as suffering from tendinitis by a specialist surgeon in the capital. The condition in some cases can be healed by complete rest, but usually requires surgery to correct. Allen, who tops the scoring charts for the Mariners with six goals so far this season. is to return to the specialist in the new year, when the decision will be made whether to go ahead with the operation. The best case scenario is that Bradley, a member of the famous footballing Allen family, will be able to begin training again in January, and return to first team action in early February. "I'm devastated. If the surgery has to happen, and I hope it doesn't, I will just have to set my sights on getting back properly for pre-season training and be raring to go for next year," Allen told the Grimsby Evening Telegraph. Grimsby manager Lennie Lawrence also told the paper: "It's a blow for us. He's had further opinions on it and hopefully rest and treatment will clear it up. We will just have to wait." The news comes at a time when Lawrence is attempting to agree contract terms with his other first choice striker, David Nielsen, on loan from FC Copenhagen. The pair are locked in talks, essentially the stumbling point being the Dane's wage demands.
