Contract Talks Have Begun!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 24/04/2002

THE talks between the players who the club want to keep have started. Bradley Allen is reported to have been offered a new deal when the TV crisis is sorted and he has accepted. Paul Groves does not know exactly how much cash is available but is proceeding with his attempts to keep his players.

Speaking to Mariners Net he said: "We're in negotiations with one or two of the players now, obviously those discussions can drag on, but we're trying to sort those out as soon as possible. The overriding factor that is slowing things down at the moment is the ITV Digital uncertainty."

On Michael Boulding and Simon Ford being looked at by other clubs he said: "That's credit to them, they're the ones that have created that interest. That's good for us in that they've been playing well and they're in demand."

"We'd like to be able to strengthen the squad. That won't happen in the immediate future. We need to address the lads that are still here, tie up the ones we wish to keep, and then move on to other players."

On contracts for himself and Graham Rodger he said: "We've had an initial meeting, and I'm sure we'll sit down in the near future, and start and thrash things out, but at the moment we're trying to sort out things with the players. Obviously we're aware of our situation and we want that sorting out at some stage."
